Police-family stand-off ends

The stand-off between the family members of Krutibash Mohapatra, who allegedly died in police custody, and the police has been resolved following announcement of compensation and assurance of providing a job to his kin.

The dead body of Krutibash was finally taken for cremation late on Sunday night after the CESU authorities announced Rs 1 lakh compensation and a job to a family member within three months. Rs 10,000 was also paid from the Red Cross fund for performing the cremation rites.

The family members had squatted on the Special Energy Police station premises along with the dead body for over 36 hours. Krutibash, who was an accused in a theft case at CESU Central Store Choudwar, had allegedly died in police custody on March 1. While police claimed that he had committed suicide by consuming poison, family members and locals alleged foul play, questioning how he could do so in police custody.
