Perturbed over administrative inaction, a group of women in Thakurmunda area of Mayurbhanj on Friday and Saturday went on rampage destroying country made liquor outlets and gambling hideouts.

A group of nearly 200 women, members of SHGs took the initiative as police and the excise sleuths failed to act despite their repeated demands. Women leader Jyotshna Panigrahi said they were fed up with the nuisance created by anti-social elements who heckle passersby. “There are many schools and hostels in the area and the stretch is unsafe for girl students. We had informed police to take action, but they didn’t do anything,” she said.

Women volunteers and SHG members of Thakurmunda, Toramara, Digadhar, Rugudibandha, Gobarjoda, Guhaldihi and Niharangadi destroyed liquor shops, besides raiding houses of liquor suppliers. They also set a gambling den on fire.

They submitted a memorandum to Collector, SP and District Excise officer to stop illegal trading of liquor and gambling in dhabas, near educational institutions and religious spots.
