Students 'Forced' to Clean Toilets

JHARSUGUDA: In yet another case of harassment of students by school authorities, two girls of Kurmipara Project High School under Belpahar Municipality were ‘forced’ to clean the toilet by the headmistress in-charge.

The incident occurred on October 27 and came to fore on Monday when cases were registered against the accused headmistress, Kamla Saraf, by parents of the two girls - Lija Mahara and Sunita Sah. Both the girls are studying in Class V of the school and were asked to clean the toilets during the recess.

The girls informed their parents about the incident after returning home and the latter took up the matter with the headmistress, who refuted the allegation and accused the girls of lying. The parents then filed written complaints with Block Education Officer Surendra Sahoo, who ordered an inquiry into the incident on November 11.

With the inquiry report not coming forth, the parents on Monday registered complaints with District Child Protection Officer Sunanda Maharana. If the allegation is found true, action will be taken against Saraf, Sunanda said.

A few days back, a teacher of Saraswati Sishu Mandir in Attabira, Bargarh, was arrested for assaulting a Class IV student of the school, Sujit Acharya. The student was accused of breaking a tile in the computer lab while playing.
