Torrential Rain in Balasore

BALASORE: With torrential rain accompanied with gusty winds lashing northern region of the State after the cyclone Hud Hud hit Andhra Pradesh coast around Sunday noon, panic gripped the villages in Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts which were affected by the Phailin induced flash floods last year.

The northern region has been witnessing continuous rain since the wee hours of Sunday.

Though this part of the State was out of the ambit of Hud Hud, the administration apprehended flash flood in the aftermath due to incessant rain in the catchment areas of rivers Budhabalanga and Subarnarekha in Mayurbhanj and Chhattisgarh respectively.

Balasore district received 610 mm of rainfall with an average of 50.83 mm in last 24 hours.

Though Budhabalanga’s catchment areas including Jeypore received 69.6 mm rain and Balimundali 32.4 mm, Subarnarekha’s catchment areas experienced less rain.

Both the rivers were flowing below the warning levels till last reports came in.

Collector Sanatan Mallik said the officials have been asked to remain alert in the vulnerable pockets and evacuate people if the situation warrants.

“Cyclone shelters have been kept ready and dry food stocked. We are monitoring the situation,” he said urging people not to get panic.
