Headmaster Arrested for Corporal Punishment

Headmaster of a Government-run primary school was arrested on Saturday on charges of abusing and beating up a Class I student in the school on Friday.

KENDRAPARA: Headmaster of a Government-run primary school was arrested on Saturday on charges of abusing and beating up a Class I student in the school on Friday.

The six-year-old student, Aakash Mallick of Naranapur Primary School in Naranapur village under Kendrapara Sadar police limits suffered fracture in his right leg after the accused headmaster, Alekh Chandra Sethi, allegedly bashed him up for failing to give correct answer to a question. Alekh clarified, “Aakash was creating disturbance in the classroom for which I mildly beat him with a ruler, but inadvertently he suffered fracture in his leg.”

Subsequently on Saturday, father of the student, Ananta Mallick registered an FIR leading to Alekh’s arrest on charges of corporal punishment. He was produced in the SDJM Court which remanded him in judicial custody after rejecting his bail plea.

Meanwhile, parents of students of the school demanded the District Education Officer to initiate exemplary action against the headmaster.

The Education Officer, Markat Keshari Ray said an inquiry will be called by the School and Mass Education Department after which, action will be taken against him.
