BHUBANESWAR: Doctors of Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) here have successfully performed a bypass heart surgery through lateral thoracotomy approach.
The patient, Upendra Mohanta (59) of Palashpanga in Keonjhar district, was suffering from left main coronary artery disease. A team of doctors including Dr Bana Bihari Mishra, Dr Ashok Badamalick and Dr D Senapati performed the surgery that involves a smaller incision through the ribs to access the organs. The procedure is stated to have low risk of infection and other complications than the conventional sternotomy approach.
