SAMBALPUR: One Meta Lakra (55) was killed in the alleged assault by Excise officials during a raid in Nuadihi village under Mahulpali police limits in the district on Monday. The raid was conducted to curb illegal sale of country liquor.
During the raid, a scuffle ensued between the villagers and Excise officials. Meta fell down in the scuffle and died on the spot.
Following his death, the villagers set the country liquor manufacturing unit in Jarabaga village, three km from Nuadihi on fire after ransacking it. Enraged villagers also staged a demonstration in front of the country liquor manufacturing unit demanding `20 lakh compensation for the bereaved family. However, normalcy was restored after the administration officials assured the villagers of looking into the matter.
