Abducted Trader Rescued, 3 Held

BHUBANESWAR: Commissionerate Police rescued a businessman and arrested three persons for his abduction on Monday night.

Sources said the businessman, Somesh Panda, was abducted by five persons from a hotel at Bapuji Nagar on Sunday. While the group demanded ` five lakh from Panda’s associates for his release, a waiter of the hotel, who witnessed the incident, reported the matter to police following which a case of kidnapping was registered at Capital police station.

Police said after kidnapping Panda, the accused took him to an isolated place in Sunderpada. On Monday night, while they were changing their location, the Quick Action Team (QAT) and Capital Police personnel apprehended them near Punama Gate. While three of them were arrested, their two accomplices managed to escape. The arrested persons have been identified as Duryodhan Nayak (32) alias Tuan of Old Town, Biswajit Patnaik (26) of Bhimtangi and Narayan Mallick (19) of Punama Gate area. Search is on for Rajnikanta Patnaik and Lucky who managed to escape, police said.

Tuan has several cases pending against him. He was operating in the Capital City for the last 11 years, said Police Commissioner RP Sharma. The accused had looted `7,200, two gold rings and a mobile phone of Panda besides brutally assaulting him.
