BJP on Fault Finding Mission

Members of committee formed by party to tour Odisha from Aug 2 to ascertain the cause of debacle in the last elections

BHUBANESWAR: After the drubbing in the April elections to Assembly and Lok Sabha, the State BJP has initiated the process to strengthen the party organisation from the grassroot level.

The party has constituted a six-member committee to find out the reason for its debacle in the elections despite a strong ‘Modi wave’ and suggest measures to strengthen the party.

The committee comprising State unit president KV Singhdeo, Bijay Mohapatra, Manmohan Samal, Suresh Pujari and Odisha in-charge Arun Singh will tour four places of the State beginning from August 2 and hold discussion with party candidates who contested the last two elections.

Meanwhile, the party has collected reports from observers who had visited all the 21 parliamentary constituencies to identify the shortcomings within the party.

The reports of the observers were analysed by a core committee of the party in two separate meetings.

Members of the committee will visit Berhampur on August 2, Sambalpur on August 3, Bhadrak on August 4 and Cuttack on August 4.

They will hold discussion with district functionaries and BJP candidates who contested the last election.

The purpose of the visit of the committee is to find out what went wrong in the last elections and identify the strengths and weaknesses of the party in the due process, party spokesperson Samir Mohanty said.

Though the vote percentage of the BJP has doubled after 2009 elections, it could win only one seat out of 21 LS seats and 10 Assembly seats.

The party could not translate the ‘Modi wave’ into votes due to serious shortcomings in its organisational network.

The party has come second in 35 Assembly seats while losing 13 of them by a margin of below 10,000.

Besides, the party lost five out of the seven seats it had won in 2009 elections.
