NHRC Notice to Govt on Contaminated Water

BHUBANESWAR: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked the State Government to submit an action taken report (ATR) on contaminated water allegedly being supplied to different towns of Odisha.

Acting on a complaint, the Commission has directed the Secretary in the Housing and Urban Development Department G Mathi Vathanan to reply as the Department is managing water supply in urban areas.

At present, about 776.48 million litres of drinking water is supplied per day to 103 urban local bodies (ULBs) covering 45.6 lakh people of the State. The petition had alleged that drinking water supplied in the State does not meet the parameters set by the Urban Development Ministry.

He alleged that people of some urban areas of the State are forced to drink sub-standard quality of water.
