Daylight Heist on City Road, Diamonds Looted

BHUBANESWAR: In a daring daylight robbery, two bike-borne miscreants allegedly looted diamonds worth Rs 12 lakh from a car parked close to Kharavel Nagar police station here on Saturday.

The two robbers smashed the window pane of the car and picked up the booty before speeding away on the bike. They apparently were trailing the vehicle for quite sometime. The car was parked on the busy Janpath in front of a jewellery showroom.

Shyam Sundar Patnaik, a senior manager with a diamond trading company, had come for a business deal to the jewellery shop, located next to the police station. He had kept some cheques and the precious stones in a bag on the rear seat of the car and gone into the jewellery shop for a business deal, he stated in his complaint.

Though some onlookers allegedly saw the robber duo with masks, police suspect that something was amiss in the story. They were also looking into the role of insiders in the incident.

The police was also examining the CCTV camera footage of the jewellery shop outside which Patnaik had parked his vehicle.  “There were some contradictions in the complaint. While Patnaik claimed to have met the manager of the jewellery shop, the latter denied any such meeting taking place. We are looking into all the angles,” said Police Commissioner RP Sharma.
