Veteran Congress Leader Dead

BHUBANESWAR: Noted Dalit leader and veteran Congressman Laxman Mallick died at a City nursing home here on Sunday. He was 88.

Mallick was member of State’s first Legislative Assembly - post-Independence - in 1952 from the Cuttack Rural constituency. Later, was re-elected to the Assembly in 1961, 1971 and 1974 and served as a minister in the early 1970s. He was also elected as Member of Parliament in 1980 and 1984 as a Congress candidate. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and a son. Mallick’s death has been condoled by political leaders from across party-lines.
