Minor Rape Victim Attempts Suicide

SALEPUR:A minor rape victim on Saturday tried to end her life by consuming pesticide at her house fearing social stigma. The girl, a student of Plus Two Arts, is undergoing treatment at the Mahanga Community Health Centre (CHC) and her condition is stated to be stable.

She was allegedly raped by her 28-year-old neighbour while her parents were not at home in Gunupur village under Mahanga police limits. While her father Jairam, a vegetable vendor, had gone to the market, her mother Manorama had been to a nearby temple.

According to the FIR filed by Jairam, his daughter was sitting alone in the verandah of his house at around 9 am when the accused Shankar Paramanik, a tractor driver, took her inside forcibly and raped her. After committing the crime, Shankar threatened the girl of dire consequences if she informed anyone about the incident and fled.

Following the incident, the girl consumed pesticide in a bid to end her life. When Manorama returned, she found her daughter vomiting and rushed her to Mahanga CHC with the help of some locals. After preliminary treatment, the girl informed her parents about the incident and an FIR was registered. Acting on the FIR, the police swung into action and arrested the accused later in the day.
