Man Arrested for Cheating Girls on Pretext of Marriage

BHUBANESWAR: The Khandagiri police on Friday arrested a 30-year-old man for cheating young girls by luring them with marriage proposals.

The man was identified as Siba Ranjan Patnaik, a native of Kodala in Ganjam district. He stayed in a rented accommodation at Aiginia.

According to police, Patnaik had lured young girls by claiming that he was an IAS officer for the last several years and at times, he posed as a software engineer earning in lakhs.

After trapping the girls, he would establish physical relation and take money from them on multiple occasions. Later, he used to ditch them by giving false and fabricated excuses, the police said.

The matter came to light when two girls, from whom Patnaik had taken around `5 lakh by promising to marry them and take them to the US, informed a local TV channel about the matter.

The police conducted a search and nabbed the fraudster near Aiginia godown.

During interrogation, Patnaik confessed to the crime, Khandagiri police said. Patnaik is married and has a two-year-old daughter.

On the basis of the complaint lodged by the two girls, a case was registered. The accused has been booked under Sections 419, 420, 354 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code.

Patnaik was produced in a court which remanded him in judicial custody. Further investigation is on.
