'Sewer Plan to be Over by 2016'

BHUBANESWAR: Housing and Urban Development Minister Pushpendra Singhdeo on Friday said in the Assembly that the State Government has fixed the target to complete the integrated sewerage system for the Capital City by 2016.

Replying to a question from Anshuman Mohanty (Congress) and supplementaries, the Minister said the estimated cost of the Bhubaneswar project will be Rs 1180 crore which has been financed by the 13th Finance Commission and other sources. The Minister said sewer laying work is under progress and the same has been completed for a length of 105 kms till now. Similarly, the sewerage in Cuttack has been estimated Rs 1802 crore. He said work on laying 125-km sewer line in Puri is in progress.

The Minister, however, maintained that sewerage system cannot be constructed in all municipalities and urban centres as it needs heavy investment. The State Government has decided to adopt alternative method of sewage disposal in these towns. He said sewage disposal machines will be pressed into service in 33 towns including district headquarters.
