HC Slaps Fine on Rabi Nanda

CUTTACK: The Orissa High Court on Monday imposed a fine of `10,000 on senior BJD leader and former minister Rabinarayan Nanda for deliberately trying to delay adjudication of an election dispute against him.

The single judge bench of Justice BN Ratha expressed displeasure over a petition filed by Nanda seeking time to depose in the case on medical grounds and termed it an attempt to delay proceedings.

Nanda had filed an election dispute challenging the election of Taraprasad Bahinipati from Jeypore Assembly segment. As per the proceeding, Nanda was required to depose in the case before the court on Monday but he filed a petition seeking more time on medical ground. Nanda claimed that he was suffering from heart ailments and submitted a medical certificate from a Gynaecologist who had advised him rest.

Examining the medical certificate, the court observed that the doctor was not competent to give such a certificate and accordingly rejected the petition. On the other hand, Bahinipati objected to the petition and submitted that it was intended to delay the proceedings.
