Two Cheers for Nandankanan

Nandankanan Zoological Park has two reasons to cheer about.

BHUBANESWAR:Nandankanan Zoological Park has two reasons to cheer about. While it has made it to Trip Advisor’s list of top Asian zoos, the animal park on Thursday recorded birth of two lion cubs, the first in last 11 years.

The cubs were born to Radha and Krish. Radha was one of the four felines which were brought from Bannerghatta National Park last year.

The Zoo sources said, several attempts for captive breeding in the last decade had failed to yield any result. The cubs have been kept under CCTV surveillance.

Meanwhile, Trip Advisor, one of world’s largest travel sites, has named Nandankanan Zoo as one of the top Asian zoos. It has been placed 18th among the top 100. At least four Indian zoos made it to the list.

Apart from Nandankanan, the others included Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, Mysore (7th), Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, Darjeeling (22nd) and Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad (23rd). At least five Indian amusement parks also figured among the top Asian list.

Trip Advisor brought out the list to announce the 2015 Travellers’ Choice Awards around the globe. The awards are based on valuable reviews and opinions from Trip Advisor travellers across the world.

The winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews for amusement parks, water parks, zoos, and aquariums worldwide, gathered over a 12-month period.

Country Manager of Trip Advisor, India said, “It’s great to see zoos and amusement parks in India being recognized at an international level.”
