Govt Threat to Close BDA City Centre

BHUBANESWAR: The General Administration (GA) Department has threatened to cancel the licence of BDA City Centre at Unit IV in the Capital after an inquiry revealed that the area was utilised by the lessee on rent for wedding receptions and parties, violating the clauses in the lease deed.

In a notice issued to the Chairman, BDA City Centre on Monday, the department listed a host of irregularities and rampant deviation from the clauses in day-to-day operation area.

BDA City Centre came into existence after restructuring of the erstwhile BDA Nicco Parks and Resorts Ltd in March, 2007 with a joint sector agreement among BDA, Sun Tech City Pvt Ltd and Nicco Corporation.

While it was clearly mentioned in the agreement that the licensee would develop the area into a recreational centre and multiplex cinema, a field inquiry conducted by GA department has exposed gross violation of the clauses in the agreement.

The land popularly known as ‘lake area’ spreading over 24.12 acres has transformed into an unhygienic patch and it was found that the activity area and indoor recreational centre on the premises was primarily used for marriages and other social functions of private parties on rent.

Though the lessee has been entrusted with the responsibility to keep the land free from garbage and maintain it regularly, the enquiring officer found it to be dirty and unattended.

GA Department has directed the private firm to stop the ongoing practice and expedite construction of multiplex cinema and recreational centre on the premises. The lessee has been granted one year to fulfil the department’s orders failing which its licence would be nullified.

The area was first allotted in favour of BDA-Nicco Parks and Resorts Ltd in September 1998 for setting up an amusement park and related activities. However, in 2007 the BDA-Nicco Park was restructured into a joint venture as the BDA City Centre.
