Youth 'Settles Score' on Facebook, Held by CB

BHUBANESWAR: Even as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has gone after cyber offenders for circulating objectionable videos of women in social media, the Crime Branch of State Police on Saturday arrested a 22-year-old Post-Graduate student who had created a fake Facebook account in the name of a former female friend and uploaded pornographic content.

The accused, Bikash Shatabdi, was arrested by a team of Cyber Crime Police from Puri of which he is a resident.

Bikash and the victim were classmates at BJB Autonomous College here but due to some personal animosity, the 22-year old resorted to vilification acts on the social media to settle the score.  The girl, however, had no inkling of the fake account till her friends informed her about the objectionable pictures which were posted. She lodged an FIR with the Cyber Crime Police Station last year during January.

Crime Branch sources said, Bikash had apparently sent out friend requests to friends of the girl from the fake account. Apart from personal photographs of the girl, the FB page also had several of her pictures which were morphed on objectionable images. Surprised, her friends brought the matter to her notice.

“We started investigating into the matter and looked for the internet service provider as well as wrote to the India unit of Facebook. Instead, we were asked to write to the US office for removal of pictures and seek technical details of the account,” Additional Director General of Crime Branch Bijay Sharma said.

Though the response took time, basing on the technical evidence and reports of the Facebook Law Enforcement Response Team from USA as well as the Legal Investigations Support of Google Inc, the Cyber Crime Police found out that Bikash had used his mobile phone to create the account as well as access it. The investigating officer seized the mobile phone handset, SIM cards and memory chip from the accused. He will be produced before a local court on Sunday.
