Student's Death: OHRC Seeks GRP Probe Status

BHUBANESWAR: Odisha State Human Rights Commission (OHRC) on Friday directed the Government Railway Police (GRP) to submit the status report on probe into Ravenshaw College student Pragyan Saswati Priyadarshini’s death in February.

17-year-old Pragyan’s body was found near Kuhudi railway station with serious injuries on her head. Her mother Saradamani Das had moved the OHRC on April 14 alleging that the Khurda GRP was going slow in investigating the case.

Das had alleged that she was given a copy of the FIR after one month of lodging a written complaint with Nirakarpur GRP. Similar practice was adopted by the police in handing over the post-mortem report of Pragyan to her family, the petition stated.

“A police official instead of investigating the case, asked us as to why we allowed Pragyan to study in Ravenshaw College rather than getting her married to a particular person who had proposed to her,” said Das. This apart, the GRP is even asking the family of the deceased to produce the witnesses and the mobile recordings, the petition said.

Pragyan’s family left no stone unturned to get the justice including approaching the office of DG Police, State Railway Police Headquarters and Odisha State Commission for Women (OSCW). However, the investigators have no clue on whether she was murdered or it was an accident.

OHRC Chairperson Justice BK Mishra has directed IG of GRP to furnish a detailed report on investigation status of the case. Meanwhile, the OSCW has also sought a report from GRP on the matter.
