KEONJHAR: A woman died at Keonjhar District Headquarters Hospital on Tuesday night allegedly due to wrong transfusion of blood. Tension prevailed in DHH on Wednesday following the incident.
Irate family members and relatives of the deceased woman, Sukanti Naik (45), and locals blocked the road near DHH for nearly five hours and staged a demonstration demanding action against the guilty and compensation.
Sukanti of Hadabandhasahi under Town police limits, who was suffering from malnutrition, was admitted to bed No. 89 in female medicine ward of the DHH around 1.30 pm on Tuesday.
Dr Sujit Kumar Brahma, who was on outdoor duty, suggested blood transfusion. Accordingly, Sukanti’s husband Birendra Naik applied for ‘O’ positive blood in the blood bank where laboratory technician, Bharati Mahanta, was on duty.
After some time, Bharati supplied ‘A’ positive blood to Birendra instead of ‘O’ positive and staff nurse Hemangini Mahanta started blood transfusion.
A short while later at about 9 pm, Sukanti died in the hospital.
The family members learnt that wrong blood group had been transfused without proper verification. The hospital authorities also admitted that a major mistake had been committed.
On the instruction of the District Collector, Chief District Medical Officer Dr Kabindra Prasad Sahoo dismissed Bharati and Hemangini for negligence. The CDMO also recommended disciplinary action against Dr. Brahma.
Sub-Collector Purna Chandra Mishra and other senior police officers held discussions with the agitators following which they called off the blockade around 2 pm. The administration also paid `20,000 to the relatives of the deceased as compensation.
