Minor Rape Victim Sets Herself on Fire, Dies

According to her family members,  the girl was forcibly taken by their neighbour Ranjan (34), who is married, to his house.

BHUBANESWAR: Unable to bear the trauma, a 16-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide by setting herself on fire after she was raped at Bhagbanpur under Town police station limits in Dhenkanal district on Sunday.

The girl doused herself with kerosene before setting herself on fire. The minor was raped by her neighbour Ranjan Sahu while she had gone out of her house to attend nature’s call in the wee hours. An FIR was lodged with Town police station. The accused absconded after the FIR was filed. Police reached the spot and are investigating. According to her family members,  the girl was forcibly taken by their neighbour Ranjan (34), who is married, to his house.

On Sunday morning,  Ranjan confessed to have committed the crime and apologised to the family members of the girl. The girl’s family and the accused’s family then signed a compromise note and submitted it at the Town police station. The victim’s mother was, however, reluctant for to go for a compromise.

After the families signed the compromise note, the victim is learnt to have told her sisters that she felt hurt and humiliated. Unable to bear the traumatic condition and social stigma, she committed suicide by pouring kerosene on her body and succumbed, her mother said.

Meanwhile, in another incident, people downed their shutters and disrupted traffic for six hours on Sunday demanding arrest of culprits in a minor girl’s murder case in Bhuban.
