Whale Carcass Washed Ashore Rushikulya Beach

BERHAMPUR: Carcass of a Sperm Whale washed ashore the Rushikulya beach near Bataswar temple in Ganjam block on Wednesday. The whale is 33-ft in length and more than eight-feet in breadth, weighing about three tonnes, said forest officials. The carcass bore several injury marks. Forest officials said Sperm Whales are usually seen in deep sea in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. Due to dredging in sea, the whale might have come out and hit by a ship propeller, they added. Berhampur DFO Asish Behera rushed to the spot and said a team of experts from Bhubaneswar will arrive for postmortem of the carcass after which, it will be buried.
