'Grave' Error: Widow Deprived of Ration

KORAPUT: An 80-year-old widow of Chikamba village in Dasmanthpur block has been deprived of ration card under NFSA. Reason: She was declared ‘dead’ on paper by block officials.

The woman, Duaruni Hial, has not been provided food grains under the scheme for the last three months as her name was deleted from the beneficiary list during enumeration, wrongly declaring her dead.

Though she had BPL card and was getting rice under the old PDS, Hial was denied of her entitlement under NFSA.

Sources said when her son applied for her ration card under the food security scheme, the officials rejected the application citing that the applicant was dead.

Though her son apprised the block and civil supply officials of the fact that Hial is alive, the correction is yet to be made.

Later, the officials asked Hial to come to the block office for personal appearance, but the Block Development Officer was absent.

Supply Inspector Divakar Maharana said the widow’s death may have been recorded wrongly. The matter will be verified with her identity proof and benefits will be provided to her, he added.
