Rape Bid Drives Woman to Suicide

SALEPUR: A 35-year-old married woman allegedly committed suicide fearing social stigma on Saturday after a man tried to rape her the previous evening. The incident occurred at Jerakanda village under Lalitgiri gram panchayat under Mahanga police limits.

Her husband had gone to Olasuni when the 40-year-old accused, Madhabananda Samal of Manitri village, entered her house forcibly and attempted to rape her.

Hearing her scream, her brother-in-law came out of his room and caught hold of the accused. When he tried to flee from the spot, the woman’s neighbours caught Samal and thrashed him severely. Police rushed to the spot and admitted the seriously injured Samal to SCB Medical,  Cuttack.

On Saturday, the woman registered an FIR in Mahanga police station. However, after returning home, she hanged herself from the ceiling fan in her room. The body has been seized and sent to SCB Medical for postmortem.

A case has been registered and investigation is on.

This is the second such incident in the State in the last one week. A minor girl had committed suicide in Dhenkanal on February 1. The accused Ranjan Sahoo was the girl’s neighbour and had taken her away from her house at Bhagabanpur village before committing the crime on January 30. The 16-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide the next day by immolating herself, fearing public humiliation.

NHRC Notice to Chief Secy, DGP

Dhenkanal: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued notices to Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi and DGP KB Singh asking them to file response in four weeks over rapes and murders of minor girls that took place in the district in the last week of January. 

Held for Rape

Jeypore: Jeypore Sadar police arrested Pravakar Mali of Umuri village for raping a minor tribal girl on Friday. The 15-year-old girl of Gheori village was working in a cashew factory of Gaudaguda village when Mali, her co-worker raped her. The girl’s relatives later reported the matter to police.
