JAJPUR:  A jawan of the Border Security Force (BSF) Jyotiprakash Panda alias Raja (25) of Chandipur village under Kuakhia police limits in Jajpur district allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service revolver at his work place in West Bengal.

Panda shot himself from his service revolver after duty hours on Sunday afternoon and died on the spot. Reason behind Panda taking such an extreme step is yet to be ascertained.

A member of 167 Battalion, Panda was deployed on Indo-Bangladesh border at Hemtabad camp at Raigunj of West Bengal.

He had joined Bihar Raiganj Regiment two years ago.

On being informed, Panda’s elder brother Gyanprakash rushed to Hemtabad camp in Raigunj on Sunday night.

“On Sunday at about 2.30 pm we got a telephone call from the office of the regiment commander that our son sustained bullet injuries and was admitted to hospital there. About 20 minutes later, we received another call from the office that he succumbed to the injuries,” said Panda’s father Kirtan Behari Panda. The body had not reached the village till the report was filed.

Panda had come home last month and refused to marry though proposals were ready. He, however, assured to take the vows next year, family sources said.
