Woman Singed by Quack

KORAPUT: A woman of Durgabhatta village in Dongarchinchi panchayat of Jeypore block has been admitted to Koraput District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in a serious condition after being branded with hot iron rod by a village quack of Boipariguda block on Monday.

The woman, Asmati Parja (35) was unwell for the last two weeks following which her husband Rama Parja took her to a doctor at Bagra. As she did not recover and got bed-ridden, he invited a village quack (disari) to his house.

The quack, Sadna Parja of Banuaguda village under Boipariguda block, singed Asmati’s stomach with hot iron rod and assured her that she will be able to stand in two days. Instead of recovering, Asmati’s condition deteriorated and she was rushed to Jeypore Sub-Divisional hospital and from there to DHH. Additional District Medical Officer Dr KP Behera said the patient is suffering from GB syndrome, a disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system).

“She is under observation and if her condition does not improve, we will have to refer her to a medical centre with better facilities,” he added.
