DEOGARH:An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of 12th Battalion CRPF attempted suicide at para-military barrack here early on Monday.

The ASI, BN Rao, a native of West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, shot himself with his AK 47 rifle near the barrack in Deogarh police line. On hearing gunshots, another CRPF personnel rushed to find Rao in a pool of blood. Rao was rushed to District Headquarters Hospital and later shifted to VIMSAR at Burla before being referred to SCB Medical at Cuttack, where his condition continues to be critical.

Inspector-in-charge of Deogarh police station Ratnakar Mallick said two bullets had pierced his chest.

Police suspect family dispute and financial burden as the reason behind Rao’s extreme step. A case has been registered.
