Key Henchman of Tito Gang Held, Explosives Seized

CUTTACK: The Commissionerate of Police on Wednesday formally arrested Dil Nawaz Khan alias Chiku, who was detained from the premises of SDJM’s court on Tuesday.

Two crude bombs and explosive materials such as 200 grams gun powder, one kg concrete chips, 100 grams iron nails, 100 grams bicycle bearing balls and jute threads were seized from Chiku’s possession.

Chiku, a resident of Diwan Bazar in Cuttack, is a henchman of the infamous Tito gang. He is involved in a number of criminal activities in Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara districts, DCP Sanjeev Arora said. He was also wanted in a firing case in Lalbag area on January 1 this year.

During interrogation, Chiku revealed his plans to hurl the bombs and terrorise rival gangs in Lalbag area. He was booked under Sections 3 and 5 of Explosives Substances Act and produced before Cuttack SDJM, who remanded him in judicial custody.

The timing of Chiku’s detention coincided with the production of Dhal Samanta brothers in the court on Tuesday. He was spotted by Lalbag IIC DD Baral while the latter was patrolling Cuttack Collectorate and adjoining areas. The prohibited materials were recovered when Chiku was frisked.

Including the case registered against him on Wednesday, the number of criminal cases against Chiku in undivided Cuttack and Khurda districts has reached seven, Arora added.

In a separate development, notorious anti-social Lokanath Sahu alias Loka was arrested from Chauliaganj area on Tuesday night. An imported 7.65 mm pistol and five rounds of live ammunition were seized from his possession.

Loka is a close aide of a Chauliaganj-based goon Akshay Sahu alias Akhana, who is currently lodged in Choudwar Central Jail. Akhana looks after firearm deals of Tito gang in Cuttack, sources said.

“While Loka claimed that he was supposed to sell the pistol and bullets to a customer of Akhana, he was unable to reveal details about the buyer. Upon interrogation, it was ascertained that Loka had plans of using the firearm on his opponents,” Arora said.

There are several cases pending against Loka in Choudwar and Mangalabag police stations in Cuttack. He was named in two cases for intimidating businessmen and contractors in Mancheswar and Sahid Nagar areas of the Capital City, the sources added.
