Twin City Cops Nab Notorious Gangster

BHUBANESWAR: A notorious gangster, Shashank Nayak, was nabbed by Twin City police in an hour-long operation at Jagannath Sadak near Mancheswar here on the wee hours of Wednesday. He also sustained injuries in exchange of fire with the police. Nayak has serious criminal charges, including two murders, robbery and dacoity against him at different police stations in Puri district. For the last six months, he was changing locations constantly to evade arrest and his recent hideout was a rented accommodation in Mancheswar Industrial Estate, the police said. While the Special Squad of Bhubaneswar police had already tracked him last week, it was tipped off by the local police that Nayak was travelling to Puri on a motorcycle with an associate. The squad raided the area at around 3.30 am and apprehended Nayak after an hour-long pursuit. “When asked to surrender, he opened fire at police. In retaliation, we fired two rounds, one of which hit Nayak’s right leg,” a police officer, who was involved in the operation, said. His associate managed to flee from the spot, he added. The accused was rushed to Capital Hospital first and later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack after his condition deteriorated. Nayak will be produced in Bhubaneswar SDJM’s court once he recovers, DCP Satyabrata Bhoi said.
