BHUBANESWAR: Mancheswar police on Monday arrested two persons who were involved in illegal mining of sand from Barimula ghat on the outskirts of the City.
The accused were identified as Ramesh Chandra Swain and Jajati Nayak. Swain is a native of Kalyanpur while Nayak belongs to Barimula under Pipili police limits.
Sources said the duo had been involved in unauthorised extraction and smuggling of sand from the river bed for the last one week. After being tipped off by locals, police arrested them during a midnight raid.
A large quantity of sand was seized from a tractor used by the accused. Swain and Nayak were produced in a local court which remanded them in judicial custody.
