Highway robbery gang busted, two held

CUTTACK: Chauliaganj police on Sunday busted a highway robbery gang and arrested two of its members.

The arrested duo is Sibashis Mohanty (22) and Sunil Kumar Das (19) of Nuapatana Banguari in Khurda district. Police also seized a sharp weapon, bike, a stolen mobile phone and cash of `2,100 from their possession.

DCP Sanjeev Arora said Sibashis is a notorious anti-social and a close associate of professional robber Deepak Kumar Sahoo alias Dipu. He along with his associates used to commit robbery on National Highways by targeting vehicles plying late in the night, particularly truck drivers and bikers.

On September 2, Sibashis and Sunil committed a series of robberies on the NH from Jagatpur to Pahala and inflicted knife injuries to three truck drivers and two bikers at Sikharpur, Link Road, Kathajodi Bridge and Gopalpur.

The modus operandi of the robbers was to loot commuters after inflicting serious knife injuries.

Their areas of operation covered only National Highways passing through Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Puri and Jajpur.

While two cases are pending against Sibashis and Sunil in Madhupatna and Cuttack Sadar police stations, their involvement in Balianta, Mancheswar, Saheed Nagar, Tamando, Jatni and other police stations is under investigation, Arora added.
