JEYPORE: Gruelling heat has thrown life out of gear in Jeypore sub-division, once known as the summer destination of the State.  While the hilly areas of Jeypore subdivision recorded 40 degree Celsius on Thursday, there has been no respite from the heat for people living in the plains, where the temperature has been hovering around 41 degrees C for the last one week.

According to sources, for the first time in a decade, people in the hills have been experiencing extreme heat from the third week of April. The worst affected areas are Jeypore, Kotpad, Borrigumma, Kundra and Boipariguda pockets. Potangi, one of the coolest areas of the State, is also witnessing a harsh summer as day temperature was recorded at 38, an all-time high in the last one decade.

The extreme heat has forced people to remain indoors and roads wore a deserted look.  Sources said as many as 15 persons are being treated for summer-related ailments in different hospitals of Jeypore and  Koraput sub-divisions.

District administration sources said all block officials and medical staff of the district have been asked to remain alert as the temperature is predicted to remain high during the next few days.

In April last year, the district recorded below 38 degrees C. The rising temperature this season has been attributed to massive deforestation in both hilly and plain areas.
