Snatchers’ gang busted, six arrested in Cuttack

They had formed a gang and were indulged in the snatching of gold chains at different places in Khurda, Bhubaneswar, and Cuttack.

CUTTACK: MARKATNAGAR police on Tuesday busted a three-member inter-district snatchers’ gang and arrested six persons in Cuttack. Police also seized eight stolen gold chains and a motorcycle used in the crime from their possession.

The accused have been identified as Amit Kumar S i n g h a l i a s Muna (23) of Asure swar, Sk Saddam alias Sayed Saddam of Chandinichowk, Chandra Sekhar Mahapatra alias Prafulla of Gurujanga in Khurda, receivers Dipti Ranjan Subudhi (28) of Daleiput in Khurda, Paras Nath Saha (35) of Balubazaar and Sabina Bibi (22) of Chandinichowk.

ACP Pramod Rath said Ratna Banarjee of Firingi Bazaar had lodged a complaint with Markatnagar police alleging that she along with her brother was going to her sister’s house in CDA on a motorcycle on August 25 at about 5 pm when two unidentified bike borne miscreants snatched gold chain from her neck and fled.

During the investigation, police arrested Amit and Saddam who confessed to their crime. They along with Prafulla had formed a gang and were indulged in the snatching of gold chains at different places in Khurda, Bhubaneswar, and Cuttack.

They were disposing of the stolen ornaments through Prafulla who works in an NGO. They used to mortgage the ornaments in private banks to avail loan, the ACP said. The accused were involved in 18 snatching cases in Twin City.

While 11 cases are pending against Saddam in Kharvel Nagar, Khurda, Cantonment, Markatnagar, Purighat and Cuttack Sadar police stations, eight cases pending against Amit in Markatnagar and Purighat police stations, he informed.
