BHUBANESHWAR: An 18-year-old girl, who failed in the Class 12 CBSE examination, attempted suicide after re-evaluation showed no change in the result on Monday.

Nilima Priyadarshini Bal had appeared for the examinations at a school in Koraput district. She was one of the 18 students who had moved the Odisha High Court seeking a re-evaluation.

The CBSE had on Sunday night e-mailed results to 17 students, with most of them having no change.  Some of them were found to have secured less marks than their original score.

When the CBSE sent in the re-evaluated result on Sunday night, Nilima was under stress to see no change, and consumed around 15 sleeping pills and fell unconscious. She was rushed to SUM Hospital in Bhubaneshwar and is in the ICU, and will be kept under observation for the next 24-hours, said sources.

Nilima and her parents had joined the protest against alleged discrepancies in the evaluation of CBSE class 12 examination results, which affected at least 3,000 students. The family had been camping in the city for the past one week protesting under the banner of Odisha Abhibhaka Mahansangha (OAM).

Meanwhile, the Odisha State Commission for Protection of Child Rights which had received a petition from the OAM, is likely to begin a probe into the central board’s evaluation process, which has violated child rights by causing harassment to many students.
