BHUBANESWAR:As many as 81.11 per cent students have cleared the annual Plus Two Science examination, the results of which were announced by School and Mass Education Minister Badri Narayan Patra on Friday at Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) headquarters here. The percentage is slightly higher than the last year’s 80.80.

While Balasore district recorded the highest pass percentage of 93.61, the lowest 52.51 was scored by Jharsuguda district. Apparently, Jharsuguda has been securing the lowest pass percentage for the last three academic sessions - 2015-16 (53.87) and 2014-15 (57.96). CHSE Chairman Surendra Lal said an inquiry will be initiated to find out the reasons behind low scores of students of the district.
Three colleges scored zero result as none of the students managed to clear the examination. These colleges are Binayak Junior College at Jeypore, Krushna Prasad Women’s College at Daspalla and Tapoban Junior College of Science and Technology. Two students each from these colleges took the test but failed to clear it.

A total of 90,643 students had appeared the examination this year of which 73,523 passed. While 19,087 students got first division, 26,322 were placed in second and 27,597 in third division. As many as 27 students have scored above 90 per cent. Girls have yet again outshined boys by scoring 82.36 per cent. The pass rate of boys was 80.29 per cent.
The Scheduled Tribe and Scheduled Caste students have done marginally well as compared to last year.  Last year, their pass percentage was 65.30 and 72.42 respectively while this year, it is 65.96 and 73.58.
The CHSE Chairman said students can apply online for rechecking till May 28. They will have to pay `200 per paper. Results of Arts, Commerce and Vocational streams will be announced by May 31.
This year, 3,80,707 students appeared for the examinations in all the four streams of Arts, Science, Commerce and Vocational. Of them, 2,43,106 appeared the tests in Arts stream and 28,481 for Commerce. This apart, 8,573 Vocational students, 1,007 compartmental and 8,550 correspondence students also took the tests.

In wake of the goof-up in Mathematics and Chemistry papers by CHSE during this year’s exam, the Council had decided to debar the printing press, where the question papers were printed, for a period of three years. Moreover, the expenditure incurred in cancelling the Mathematics test on March 14 and rescheduling the Chemistry exam to March 30 will be borne by the printing press firm. The CHSE had mistakenly sent Chemistry papers in place of Mathematics to 14 examination centres on March 14.

Govt to prescribe books

This year, the State Government will prescribe books for all Plus Two subjects in three streams of Arts, Science and Commerce. Informing this to mediapersons, CHSE Chairman Surendra Lal said till now, the Council allowed students to study from books approved in the syllabus. However, from this academic session, books will be prescribed to Plus Two students. While these books will be based on CBSE pattern, questions for next year’s Plus Two tests will only be from these prescribed books, said Lal. The syllabus that was changed last year will remain the same. The step is being taken to prepare students to face national-level entrance examinations and bring them at par with CBSE students. Currently, Class XI and Class XII students read books that are only prescribed by NCERT or CBSE.
