RAYAGADA: In yet another case of negligence by ambulance services, a hapless woman delivered a child on the roadside. The incident took place at Upparasaza village under Sikarapai panchayat in Kalyansinghpur block of the district.

Sources said the woman, Lakhma Kulesika (25), developed labour pain on Thursday night. Her family members called an ASHA worker of the village. The ASHA worker immediately rang up 108 and 102 ambulance services, but there was no response. Later, they carried the woman up to  Belokonaguda village and walked a distance of 4 km.
On the way, the pregnant woman developed labour pain and her relatives called the 108 ambulance again, but in vain. The woman delivered a baby boy under a tree with the help of ASHA worker in the morning. She was later taken to Kalyansinghpur CHC by an autorickshaw where she was given treatment by a pharmacist in the absence of doctor. When contacted, an official of 108 said the family members of the woman had called both the services at around 7 am and at that time, there was no vehicle.
