BHUBANESWAR/BERHAMPUR: City Hospital of Berhampur became the first victim of ransomware WannaCry in the State as the advanced malware which has spread like wildfire across the globe hacked its information after an employee clicked a suspicious link on Tuesday.

All important information related to employee details, government schemes and expenditure incurred under them apart from crucial data on the website have been hacked, ADMO Saroj Mishra said.

The hospital received a mail from WannaCry.com  asking the management to pay $300 failing which the hospital information management system would be hacked. After an employee clicked on the link on Tuesday, the system was hacked. Police have been informed and a formal complaint would be lodged on Wednesday, the ADMO said.

The WannaCry attack came on a day when the Electronics and Information Technology Department of the State Government woke up to the threat. Although it is the nodal agency to issue advisory on such cyber attacks, the Department issued the advisory a day after Crime Branch of State Police came up with one.

The IT Department released the advisory issued by Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN) and asked all Collectors and Departments to follow the suggestions to stay protected against such attacks.
