BARIPADA: A woman was assaulted and forced to wear a garland of shoes by residents of Nuadihi village in Mayurbhanj district for allegedly supporting a youth who had abducted a minor girl of the village.
A video of the whole incident has apparently gone viral on social media. According to sources, the incident took place in Nuadihi village under Sankhabhanga panchayat on Thursday and the victim has been identified as Baripada Sadar block chairperson.
As per reports, a minor girl was allegedly kidnapped by a youth of nearby Ranibhola village following which the girl’s mother had lodged a complaint in Sadar police station. It is alleged that the block chairperson had supported the youth and compelled the girl’s family not to interfere in the matter. The family in their complaint had also alleged that the chairperson asked them to get their daughter married to the youth.
When the chairperson came to the village on Thursday to discuss the matter with the girl’s mother, the villagers thrashed her and forced her to wear a garland of shoes. The entire incident immediately went viral in social media. Later, both the parties reached the police station and lodged complaints.
The police reportedly initiated an investigation into the incident. “A complaint was lodged by the chairperson. The other party has also filed a counter case against her. We are investigating the case based on the complaints filed in police station and no one has yet been arrested,” said IIC Swarnalata Minz.
