‘Mitra not held for comments on rasagolla’

BHUBANESWAR:Odisha Police on Saturday pointed out that Delhi-based journalist Abhijit Iyer Mitra was not arrested for his comments on rasagolla, but for making controversial remarks on the State’s culture.“There have been reports in some sections of media that Mitra was arrested for his remarks on rasagolla, but such claims are false. He was apprehended for his objectionable remarks on Odisha’s art and culture,” a police officer said.

Meanwhile, Konark Police are questioning Mitra after taking him on two-day remand in connection with a case registered against him under Sections 34, 153A, 295A and 298 of IPC read with Section 66 of Information Technology Act and Section 30 of Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act.

Police had produced the journalist before a JMFC court in Konark which later allowed them to take him on two-day remand for further questioning him in connection with the case registered against him.
On Tuesday, Saheed Nagar Police had arrested Mitra for a case registered against him under various Sections of IPC and Information Technology Act.
