CHENNAI: Remember Bhanumathi, the baby that was rescued from a pavement at Langs Garden Road in Pudupet a few months ago? Now in the safe hands of Udavum Karangal, an NGO, Bhanu is happily celebrating Christmas.

Three-and-a-half year old Bhanu’s life has changed a lot in the last four months. She is no more the emaciated child that Express found by the roadside. Bhanu is slowly becoming cheerful and healthy, with the care and medication that the NGO provided.

Within the last four months, her body weight too has doubled. She now weighs eight kg - she was barely four kg when Udavum Karangal took her into its fold.

When Express visited her at Udavum Karangal, she was in the arms of ‘papa’ Vidyaakar, the founder of the NGO.

“There is a smile on her face and she responds to the people who take care of her,” Vidyaakar said.

At times, Bhanumathi makes an attempt to speak.

But she can only mumble a few words, Vidyaakar said.

She has been given physiotherapy and speech therapy to improve her speech skills.

The baby, who could only manage to sit earlier, can now walk with support. But she is more than happy to jump from one shoulder to another.

She dances to the tune of Christmas songs loves Santa Claus and spreads cheer all around.
