Future tense as girl claims answer script mix up

A girl student’s dream to pursue a professional career was dampened by the apathetic attitude of evaluators for the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations.

While many aspirants, who have cleared the exams are all in a tizzy, awaiting counselling to get admission for professional courses, M Karthiga, of Velloor village, Srivaikundam, Thoothukudi district, is running behind officials to find her original marksheet. Karthiga obtained photo copies of her answersheet as she was baffled by the discrepancies in her marksheet. The answersheets justified her agony as she realised that it carried a different hand writing. The girl did her schooling at KGS Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School in Srivaikundam and appeared for the Plus Two examinations, in March 2012.

Karthiga, after completing her exams, was dreaming of a bright career, but the results have shattered her dreams. Her mark sheet, bearing register number 166865, stated that she had obtained only 639 marks out of 1200 in the HSC examinations, which came as a great shock to her, as she had scored 1,132 in the half yearly exam and her marks had never gone below 900 in other exams.

“The results were unbelievable, since I expected more than 1,000 marks. Hence, I immediately applied for the photocopies of the answer scripts in all the subjects,” Karthiga told Express. “The photocopies sent to me further agonised me, since the handwriting in the answer sheets was not mine. Moreover, they had sent me photocopies of answer scripts for Physics, Chemistry and Biology only, though I applied for all the subjects. The annexure sheets attached to the main answer scripts also are much less than what I had written. The details of the annexure sheets which I used in the public exam can be verified with the document record of the examination centre where I appeared for the exams,” she added.

“My father is a farmer and mother a housewife. They were hopeful about my marks and my future. The result was so distressing that my mother fell sick consequently and was hospitalised for days together. I also suffered unexplainable stress and was sick,” Karthiga recounted.

Karthiga has sent petitions to the Directorate of Government Examinations, and the Directorate of School Education in Chennai as well as to the Chief Minister, demanding swift action to rectify the anomalies pertaining to her results, so that she could get admission for professional courses.

Meanwhile, she awaits a positive response to overcome the whole fiasco and hopes for a bright career.
