Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Friday sanctioned Rs.109 crore to improve road-related infrastructure in the districts of Chennai, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram. This is in continuation of the directive of the CM for laying new roads and constructing railway bridges and carrying out maintenance works on existing structures across the State at a cost of `3,793 crore.
“Construction of foot overbridges, subways, flyover, skywalk, high-level bridge and submersible bridges will ease traffic congestion and reduce the journey time”, an official release here said.
A skywalk, costing `20 crore, will soon connect Park Station on EVR Road (Poonamallee High Road), Central Railway Station and Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital. A flyover (`40 crore) on Jawaharlal Nehru Road will stretch through the area of Kaliyamman Kovil and the Mofussil bus terminus entrance. A three-lane foot overbridge, costing `8 crore, will be built across the Coovum river, on Periyar EVR Road at Aminjikarai. Two-lane foot overbridges, one on Mount-Poonamallee-Avadi Road and the other on Singaperumal Kovil-Sriperumpudur-Thiruvallur-Red Hills Road will cost `5 crore and `2 crore respectively.
Five subways, costing `3.5 crore each, will be constructed at Anna Road near St Thomas Mount; GST Road near Guindy-MKN Road junction; near Malladi Group of Companies at Ekkaduthangal on Jawaharlal Nehru Road; near Kasi Theatre on Jawaharlal Nehru Road and near Koyambedu bus terminus on Jawaharlal Nehru Road.
A bridge on the Mount-Poonamallee-Avadi Road would be widened at a cost of `1 crore and a high-level bridge will be laid on Karanodai-Minjur Road at a cost of `9 crore. Two submersible bridges will come up on Kodambakkam-Sriperumpudur Road (`2 crore and `1 crore respectively) and another submersible bridge will be constructed on Tambaram-Mudichur-Sriperumpudur Road for `2 crore.
