56-year-old woman, sons held for murder

A 56-year-old woman, Rajakumari of Chinna Latheri, was arrested by the police in connection with the murder of her younger sister over a land dispute on Monday. Meanwhile, Rajakumari’s sons Krishnamurthy and Babu surrendered before the court in Sholinghur in connection with the murder case.

According to the police, the families of Rajakumari and her sister Rani (50), wife of Subramani and a resident of the same village, were at loggerheads over a cent of land for the past four years. On November 30, Rajakumari and her two sons intercepted Rani at Latheri bus stand when she was returning home after selling vegetables in the Vellore Market, and quarrelled with her, the police said.

During the quarrel Krishnamurthy grabbed a wooden log and hit Rani on her head killing her instantaneously. Fearing arrest, the trio fled from the spot.

The police registered a case of murder following a complaint from Rani’s son Ramesh and launched a search for the three. On Monday afternoon, the police arrested Rajakumari at Latheri bus stand while she was trying to board a bus. Later in the day, her two sons surrendered before the court. They were placed under judicial custody at the Vellore Central Prison for Men, said the police.
