Jumbo menace in field drives farmer to suicide attempt

A farmer in Thalamalai attempted to kill himself by slashing his throat on Sunday after wild elephants damaged ragi crops harvested and kept in his farm on Saturday night.

Police said Puttumadan (55) of Thottapuram in Thalamalai first attempted to hang himself. His relatives and neighbours talked him out of it but later he slashed his throat. Bleeding profusely, he was rushed to the Coimbatore GH. TN Pazhangudi Makkal Sangam district president S Mohankumar said the farmers of Sathy, Thalavadi, Bavanisagar and Bargur suffered huge losses due to frequent incursion of wild elephants and boars into their fields.
