The DMK held a huge public meeting at Mint on Wednesday evening to celebrate the 91st birthday of party general secretary K Anbazhagan. The meeting saw the participation of the party’s top leaders and allies, who showered praise on the veteran leader.

Party patriarch M Karunanidhi, however, used the platform to launch a vitriolic attack on the AIADMK government on a number of fronts.

Repeating issues that he highlighted in his speech a day earlier at his party’s demonstration against the power crunch in the State, Karunanidhi claimed the law and order situation was deteriorating.

He also attacked the AIADMK government for not taking a cue from the Karnataka government and holding an all-party meet on the Cauvery water sharing issue.

Karunanidhi had kept up with the rising tempo of the past few weeks when his son M K Stalin was holding meetings at various centres to prepare the party organisation for the Lok Sabha polls.

He exhorted his party cadre to work towards the Lok Sabha polls. “The DMK is not a party that will be cowed down if the government tries to suppress it. It is not a party that will stop growing because the media is not on its side. It is not a party that can be destroyed,” said Karunanidhi.

Earlier, Karunanidhi and other DMK allies heaped praise on Anbazhagan on his birthday. Karunanidhi hailed him as ‘my leading pillar in the Dravidian Movement’.

DMK treasurer Stalin, Central Chennai MP Dayanidhi Maran, Dravidar Kazhagam president K Veeramani, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol Thirumavalavan and Indian Union Muslim League state chief K M Khader Mohideen were among those who took part in the function.
