Man tries to kill daughter, gets lifer

A 35-year-old carpenter was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by the Tirupattur sub-court here on Tuesday for attempting to murder his daughter on May 24 this year.

Judge of Tirupattur sub-court Sournam J Natarajan pronounced Srinivasan of Jolarpet guilty of attempting to murder his third daughter Karpagam (2) by strangulating her. The judge sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment and slapped a fine of `2,000, said additional public prosecutor C Pandiyan.

Srinivasan had married Lakshmi (27) 10 years ago, and had three daughters -- Vennila (9), Anandi (5) and Karpagam (2). He often used to quarrel with his wife for giving birth to three girls.

On May 24 this year, Srinivasan tried to strangulate Karpagam. The child raised an alarm before falling unconscious. Lakshmi and neighbours came to Karpagam’s aid and rushed her to the Government Hospital at Tirupattur.

Following a complaint from Lakshmi, police had registered a case against Srinivasan under section 307 of IPC and arrested him.
