Spate of suicide bids in TN due to poor show; one dead

According to police, Gayathri (15), a student of Govindapuram in Dindigul, immolated herself and died after someone informed her that she had failed in Mathematics. However she had passed in all the subjects with a total of 230.

While Gayathri’s father Narayanan was a security guard, her mother Murugammal was working as a domestic help. When the results were announced on Tuesday, someone had told Gayathri that she secured only 16 marks in Mathematics, the police said.

When her mother Murugammal reached home in the evening with the print out of the result, she found the charred body of her daughter. Gayathri had scored 37 marks in Mathematics and had passed in all the subjects, police added.

In another incident, three friends attempted suicide by consuming poison shortly after the results were out. Police said the girls, all students  of  Samayanallur government high school, had failed in two subjects.

Prabadevi, Saundariya and Valarmathi took the extreme step after their poor show in the examinations, police said. All the three have been admitted to the GRH and are in a critical stage.

Two more students Priaya of Poovandhi in Sivaganga district and Jayameenakshi of Mudaliarkottai in Sholavandhan also attempted suicide by consuming poison after knowing their results. They were also brought to GRH for treatment, the police also said.
