DMK president M Karunanidhi who has been critical about the functioning of the Election Commission for a long time, on Tuesday supported BJP leader LK Advani’s suggestion for a collegium to appoint Election Commissioners and CAG.

“The views of Advani should not be ignored just because it is expressed by an opposition party. I hope the PM and the Central government would accord importance and consider these views,” Karunanidhi said writing for party mouthpiece Murasoli.

Advani, in a letter to the Prime Minister, had expressed  concern over the present system of appointment of  the Election Commissioners, CAG and Chief Information Commissioner by the President on the advice of the Prime Minister.

Advani had suggested that these posts should be appointed by the broad-based collegium comprising the PM, the Chief Justice of India, the Law Minister and the Leaders of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. Advani had written to the PM suggesting opposition involvement in selection of CEC and CAG, saying the current system was open to “manipulation and partisanship”.
