DMK Minister Veerapandi S Arumugam shifted to Vellore Jail

Former DMK Minister Veerapandi S Arumugam was shifted to Vellore Central Prison (VCP) from Puzhal Prison here on Wednesday.

He had been arrested in Chennai on Monday on charges of criminal conspiracy for setting fire to huts in Angammal Colony in Salem on June 2 last year.

He was then taken to Salem by road and produced before a court, which remanded him to Judicial custody.

He was taken to Salem Central Prison and was later shifted to Puzhal Prison I.Meanwhile, the Puzhal prison authorities sought the help of Prisons-ADGP S K Dogra for shifting Arumugam, citing “administrative reasons” with regard to handling of VIP inmates.

As the request was accepted by the ADGP, Arumugam was shifted to VCP, the second largest jail after Puzhal Prison, on Wednesday morning. A Vellore report said Arumugam was was provided with an ‘A’ class cell. Meanwhile, DMK chief M Karunanidhi and M K Stalin had sought permission to meet Arumugam at Puzhal prison.
